n+1 is seeking a full-time Audience Manager to work in our Brooklyn office. Compensation will range from $60,000 to $64,000 and includes health and dental insurance.
n+1 is a print magazine of literature, culture, and politics published three times a year. Founded in 2004 with a mission to revive the tradition of little magazines, it has since published over fifty issues, launched two book imprints, maintained an online companion to the print magazine (nplusonemag.com), and hosted programs and events across New York City and beyond. n+1 is recognized as one of the most influential literary publications in the US; in 2023 it won a Whiting Literary Magazine Prize, which recognized the magazine as a “distinctive, erudite editorial project overflowing with rigor and generosity . . . both magnet and catapult for intellectually fearless writers.”
We’re looking for an audience manager who is passionate about n+1’s mission, keyed into its sensibility, and invested in expanding the magazine’s reach and influence. n+1 is run by the n+1 Foundation, a 501c3 not-for-profit.
The Audience Manager will:
1. Direct communications for n+1:
- Write the bulk of n+1 editorial and promotional newsletters and assign and edit newsletters by other staff members
- Plan and maintain a communications calendar, and oversee long-range comms strategy
- Write and oversee social media posts across all platforms promoting n+1 articles, books, events, and so on
- Analyze newsletter and social media data and explore areas for possible growth
2. Oversee the marketing and publicity strategy for all of n+1’s programs:
- Design marketing promotions and campaigns for the magazine, books, events, and other initiatives
- Explore new opportunities for partnerships and audience development
- Manage publicity for n+1’s various projects
- Plan and manage the design of new n+1 merchandise
- Oversee advertising in print and online
3. Plan and manage n+1 events:
- Brainstorm event programming alongside staff and oversee event execution
- Generate new event programming with external partners, including beyond New York
4. Help shape n+1’s growth:
- Assist with the planning, management, and budgeting for new initiatives
- Report to the board of directors and staff about n+1’s existing and new programs and initiatives
- Develop ways to expand n+1’s earned income through new programming
Applicants should have:
- Minimum three years experience in marketing, nonprofit, and/or media and publishing
- Excellent written communication
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, WordPress, and HTML
- Fluency in Google Drive and Google Sheets
- A natural tendency toward organization
- A knack for collaborative / group work
- Familiarity with n+1 public voice and the media and publishing landscape
- A self-directed style and an imaginative approach to shaping a new role
