France stood out: on average, wheat maturity came around 15 days earlier than long-term average. In much of central Europe, the difference was about a week to ten days.
Repeated heatwaves sped up the winter crops and shortened grain filling, the period during which wheat kernels gain much of their weight, according to the European Commission JRC MARS Bulletin report. This brought the harvest forward across western and central Europe.
So what happens when the reaper comes early?
When heat and drought force ripening, the grain ends up smaller and yields fall, because kernels have less time and water to put on weight. In Hauts-de-France, France's leading wheat-producing region, an Argus media survey indicated yields were about 7% lower than the ten-year regional average.
Germany, too, saw large regional differences. There were “relatively high shares of shriveled grain in some areas,” Axel Finkenwirth of the German Farmers' Association (DBV) told The European Correspondent.
Early maturity, however, isn't necessarily bad for the grain. In Italy, winter crop season ended 10 to 20 days early, but yields stayed favourable because the strongest heat came only after most had matured, according to the JRC report.
But there is a practical headache: “An earlier and more compressed harvest period requires greater flexibility,” said Finkenwirth. Combine harvesters – those big machines that harvest wheat – along with workers, trucks, and storage may all be needed sooner and at shorter notice. Mills and traders also have to handle more grain at once, with quality varying more than usual.
“Fixed calendar dates are becoming less reliable,” Finkenwirth said. Farmers are planting varieties that mature at different times or cope better with the heat and drought. But, he adds, “adaptation has limits when extreme heat occurs during a critical stage such as grain filling.”
